Most of us have an idealistic or exotic destination for housing not located in the U.S., whether it be in the tropics, mountains, on the lake, by the beach, city center or just that perfect remote spot. One of my Stewart Associates and her husband recently purchased a home in Costa Rica.
Thanks to the Internet we can all at least see what it would cost us to live that dream and related costs and tax implications
To find out where those dream destinations are, at least in the Americas, Point2homes.com analyzed where the greatest number of online searches of home listings were located on Google. The top-10 list of the top-20 reported destinations are included in the following table.
The costs, responsibilities in the purchase transaction, economics and legalities of home purchase and ownership vary from country to country. To see an overview of values, market requirements and a plethora of other information click http://www.globalpropertyguide.com/ Once there, on the upper left side is a listing of Regions. Once you click the region of interest, not only is there a summary, but also items (again on the left) ranging from:
- Price History
- Rental Yields
- Taxes and Costs
- Tax on Rental Income
- Buying Guide
- Landlord and Tenant
- Inheritance
- Living There
- Country Statistics
- Listings of Real Estate Agents, Lawyers, Accountants
- Online Property Searches
- House Prices
- Regional Statistics Including Capital Gains Taxes
Title insurance is available in many of these countries and should be considered as laws, courts and procedures vary significantly.

My idealistic destination is St John in the United States Virgin Islands where we have traveled to every year but one since 1985 – but if you read my blog regularly you already knew that. The picture below of Maho Bay in St John pretty much says it all.
What is your preferred destination – and did this blog spur you take another look at listings online?
Happy Home Hunting.
